JK Rowling is running a competition to find illustrators for her new book, all you have to be is between the ages of 7-12!  She will be choosing 34 pictures from the competition entries when the book is printed in November.  Deadline for the the competition is Friday 17th of July.  Take a look at the websites below with a parent or carer to find the Illustration Instructions (were they share ideas based on the chapters so far) and How to Enter (terms and conditions).

For those of you wanting something new to read, this is a brand new piece of work from JK Rowling that she has put online for free.  Chapters are being posted as the weeks roll through and there are already several chapters to catch up on!

There are a couple of other links added to the Wellbeing section of our Class Page as well.

Happy Half Term

Hello everyone, just a quick message to wish everyone a happy half term and bank holiday weekend.  As we come to the end of National Mental Health Awareness Week I hope that we have all spread, or been a recipient of, a little kindness.

It was lovely to speak to you all last week and hear about the candy floss machine constructions, chocolate cake baking and many bike rides or walks everyone is taking.  I hope that everyone continues to be safe and well.

Don't forget our Wellbeing link above if you get a bit restless over half term and want some ideas to keep you busy!

Welcome to the Summer Term

Welcome back to the start of term, although it may not quite feel like it as we are not able to all be together!  However, I hope everyone is well.  I thought I would update this page with a few more of your fabulous wellbeing ideas:

Hold a strength competition – who can hold the longest plank?

Have a board game night.

Create a new game for your family to play one evening.

Upcycle an old item – can you make it into something completely different or repair it so it is as good as new?

Make a list of any minibeasts you can find in your garden or when out for your daily exercise, what have you seen more of this spring/summer?

Write a nice note to a family member and hide it somewhere for them to find.

Teach your pets a new trick.

Other ideas and links are under the Wellbeing Star at the top of our page!

Welcome to our Spring Term!

In Year 5 we have been working hard on a new range of topics for our Spring term learning.  We have been investigating the lifecycles of living things and had Rasher visit us!  On his visit we learnt about the different cuts of meat you can get from a pig and then made sausages to cook over our campfire!  A delicious afternoon was had by all!

Also, we have been learning about the natural resources of our planet, how they are distributed and how food makes it from around the world onto our plate.  Part of this learning involved a trip to the Waitrose depot where we investigated food transport, roles in the depot, food miles and food waste.  Some of us even made donations to the Food Bank after our trip!

We continue to learn about the unfair distribution of natural resources around the world and the types of communities this impacts as well as ways in which to we can help to improve life for everyone.

Visitors and Trips!

As well as being busy exploring Space, we have also been lucky enough to have a trip and some visitors in class.  We visited the Sikh Gurdwara as part of our learning about the Sikh faith.  As well as this, we have had visits from our Community Police Officers (who were very impressed with our personal safety learning) and the Fire Service.  We were able to see their truck and have a go manning the hose!

Launching Rockets!

Through Space Day we explored, designed and made rockets to launch. We learnt about forces, pressure and the different parts of the rockets to modify and improve our designs and prototypes.

Space and beyond!

                                                                                    Welcome to Year 5!

For the past term we have been studying our Earth and beyond.  We have had a great space day, launching rockets into space! Thank you to all parents and family members for supporting the children with today, their space outfits were all fantastic!  Super scientists, NASA astronauts, stars and constellations all graced the corridors of Hatch Ride Primary School today.

As we continue the journey through our last summer term together, we ventured to the Living Rainforest!  As we explored the exotic plants, the children also learned about amazing adaptations and sustainable living.  The children really enjoyed the day!

Summer term!

Welcome to the summer term!  We begin our new topic about the Rainforests of the World and our learning starts with the uniqueness of this environment, investigating the animal species and plant life that reside there (see below for our Kapok Tree display).  Additionally, we had some exciting visitors this week who came into reinforce our electricity learning.  Mr Barnett came in to share his work on wind turbines and the importance of renewable energy sources, ably assisted by Mr Maynard!  The children were able to try on safety clothing and kit, experience travelling up a wind turbine through VR and make an efficient wind turbine trying to generate the highest voltage.  It was a fantastic morning of experiential learning!
